I just passed the citizenship test — what happens next?
You're not a citizen yet — citizenship vests when you take the Oath of Citizenship at your ceremony, not when you pass the test. IRCC will email you an invitation (or call or mail it), at least 1 week before the ceremony. Watch your email (and spam folder); nothing more is required from you until then.
How long after the test does the oath ceremony happen?
IRCC aims to invite you within 4 months of approving your application; the wait depends on its processing times and your situation. Watch your email, and don't book non-refundable international travel that overlaps the likely ceremony window.
When does my Canadian citizenship officially begin?
At the moment you take the Oath of Citizenship at your ceremony — not at the test, not when you receive your certificate. The certificate is proof of citizenship, but citizenship itself is granted by the oath.
How do I get my Canadian citizenship certificate after the oath?
For in-person ceremonies, the certificate is typically handed to you the same day. For online ceremonies, IRCC mails the paper certificate within a few weeks of receiving your signed Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship form, or, if you get an e-certificate instead, it's in the IRCC Portal within 5 business days of IRCC receiving the form.
Can I apply for a Canadian passport before my oath ceremony?
