What's Next After the Citizenship Test?

Tell us where you are and we'll show you the next milestone.

Passing the test is one step on a longer journey. Between the test and your first Canadian passport sit three more milestones, each with its own paperwork and waiting period: the oath ceremony, the citizenship certificate, and the passport application. This calculator tells you where you are, what comes next, and roughly how long to expect.

Frequently asked questions

I just passed the citizenship test — what happens next?
You're not a citizen yet — citizenship vests when you take the Oath of Citizenship at your ceremony, not when you pass the test. IRCC will send you an oath ceremony invitation through your IRCC account, typically within a few weeks to a few months. Watch your account; nothing more is required from you until then.
How long after the test does the oath ceremony happen?
Service standards vary by region and IRCC's queue. A typical wait is somewhere in the 3-to-12-week range, but longer waits are not unusual during busy periods. Check your IRCC account periodically and don't book non-refundable international travel that overlaps the likely ceremony window.
When does my Canadian citizenship officially begin?
At the moment you take the Oath of Citizenship at your ceremony — not at the test, not when you receive your certificate. The certificate is proof of citizenship, but citizenship itself is granted by the oath.
How do I get my Canadian citizenship certificate after the oath?
For in-person ceremonies, the certificate is typically handed to you the same day. For online ceremonies, IRCC mails the paper certificate within a few weeks of receiving your signed Oath of Affirmation form, and an electronic certificate is also available through your IRCC Portal account within about 5 business days of the signed form.
Can I apply for a Canadian passport before my oath ceremony?
No. Your citizenship certificate (paper original or e-certificate printed) is the gating document for a first Canadian passport application. Apply once your certificate is in hand. See our first Canadian passport guide for the full procedure.
How accurate are the wait windows shown by this tool?
The windows reflect typical IRCC and Service Canada service standards as of 2026-05-08. Actual processing varies by region, queue, and your application's complexity. Always check canada.ca for current service standards before making travel plans.
