How long do I need to live in Canada to apply for citizenship?
You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before the date of your application. The 5-year window is rolling — as time passes, early days drop out of the count.
Do days before becoming a permanent resident count?
Yes, partially. Days you were physically in Canada as a temporary resident (visitor, student, worker, or protected person) before becoming a PR count as 0.5 days each, up to a maximum credit of 365 days. That credit only applies if your pre-PR period falls within the 5-year eligibility window.
What happens if I leave Canada during the 5-year window?
Every day outside Canada doesn't count toward the 1,095-day requirement. If you take trips abroad, enter them as absences in the calculator and the tool will push your eligibility date out by the equivalent number of days.
How is the 3-out-of-5-years rule calculated?
IRCC looks at the 5 years immediately before your application date. Within that window, your days as a PR count 1.0 each and your qualifying pre-PR days count 0.5 each (capped at 365 credit days). You need the total to be at least 1,095.
When will I be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship?
Enter your PR date, any pre-PR time in Canada, and any absences. This calculator estimates both your current eligible-day total and the earliest future date you can apply, assuming you stay in Canada from today with no further absences.
