Canadian Citizenship Tax Filing Eligibility Checker

Have you filed enough Canadian tax returns to qualify for citizenship?

To apply for Canadian citizenship, IRCC requires you to have filed Canadian income tax returns for at least 3 of the 5 tax years immediately before your application — but only for years when you were actually required to file. Check off the years you filed for below to see whether you meet the requirement.

For each of the last 5 years, check the box if you filed a Canadian tax return.

Note:IRCC's 3-of-5-years rule applies only in years you were required to file a Canadian tax return under the Income Tax Act. If you had no Canadian income in a given year, you may not have been required to file — IRCC officers evaluate this case by case. This tool assumes all 5 years required a filing and simply counts the boxes you checked.

This tax filing checker is provided for informational purposes only and is not legal advice. The 3-of-5-years tax-filing requirement applies only in years when you were required to file a Canadian tax return. This tool does not evaluate whether you were required to file in any given year — if you're unsure, consult the CRA or a tax professional. Requirements can change.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of taxes do I need filed for Canadian citizenship?
You must have filed Canadian income tax returns for at least 3 of the 5 tax years immediately before your application — but only for years when you were actually required to file.
What if I wasn't required to file taxes in some years?
Years when you were not legally required to file a Canadian tax return don't count against you — and they don't count toward the 3-year minimum either. Check the 'not required to file' box for those years. Common reasons: you had no Canadian income, or you weren't yet a Canadian tax resident.
What counts as 'required to file' under Canadian tax law?
You generally must file if you owe tax, want to claim a refund, want to continue receiving the Canada Child Benefit or GST/HST credit, or you received certain types of income. CRA's website has the complete list. If you're unsure whether you had to file in a given year, consult CRA's 'Do you have to file' tool or a tax professional.
I filed late — does that still count?
Yes. If you've now filed a past-year return, that year counts as filed for citizenship purposes. Late filing may have penalties and interest on the CRA side, but it doesn't disqualify you from citizenship.
I filed in Canada some years but another country others. Does that matter?
IRCC specifically asks about Canadian income-tax filings. Filings in other countries don't replace the Canadian requirement. If you were a Canadian tax resident in a given year and were required to file in Canada, you needed to file a Canadian return — even if you also filed elsewhere.
What if I'm short on years? Can I still apply?
If you've filed fewer than the required number and were required to file in the missing years, your application may be refused. You can file late returns with the CRA and then apply once your record is complete. Use the Citizenship Day Calculator to plan your application date.
